Dined from the lunch menu on Saturday with two friends. The food was as expected at this type of grill restaurant however the service (front of house and waiter) was rather amateurish bordering on the chaotic, e.g. did not provide a menu for all diners, did not have offer sauces to accompany a roast meal and finally the final bill was missing our meals (which we corrected)!

I had high expectations of kanpai, because I had heard so big things. my friend and I have booked a last minute table, but because it was a Tuesday night, they managed to impress us; kanpai is very popular and can be very busy. the interieur has a similar feeling as the Japanese izakaya with its hidden rooms and its secluded dining room feeling. after intense viewing of the menu (and I finally give up and allow that to choose sam) we decided on the takoyaki octopus fish cake, lachs nigiri, thunfisch nigiri, lachs and avocado maki, a drachenrolle and kanpais special sashimi combo. everything comes when it's done, which means we haven't been left too long without food. the Tayoyako Octopus table cake was the perfect warm note to our meal and resembled exactly the same dish we had in tokio. I couldn't owe anything of the food, but the star of the show was the definitiw the sashimi. it came as an art piece and I could almost taste how good it would be before I picked up my first piece. the selection was fantastic and the taste was excellent. it wasn't the cheapest sushi we had, but it was probably the best and I can't expect to go back to authentic Japanese sushi experiences!

I used to live in Dinan about 20 years ago and have visited it often since and have always lunched at the Cantorbery when doing so. I checked on Tripadvisor this time and it was rated 14th but as we are in France and as...we are in Brittany I assumed that the other 13 were all creperies. Don't understand the obsession. If I want a pancake I'll make it myself. Anyway... The welcome was cordial as ever and we were met with the reassuring smell of the open fire. There was a set menu for 23 euros but none of it appealed to my wife or me so we went to the card. The amuse bouche as it turns out was the best of it. A beetroot soup with the addition of balsamic vinegar and tabasco and quite delicious. We both started with a sort of spring roll with shredded rabbit and vegetable and a side salad. It was pleasant enough but desperately lacked seasoning and we both had a shard of bone which could have lead to dental repair had we bitten down on them. We then both had the entrecote as we'd eaten quite a bit of fish recently and apart from veal kidneys steak is it for meat. The steak was fine and cooked as requested but all of the accompanying vegetables tasted the same which was of nothing and the puree was cold and unpleasant. The accompanying bearnaise did nothing to improve things. For dessert, and at 10 euros each, my wife had a sort of millfeuille with strawberries and creme anglaise and I had a shortcake biscuit with a slice of apple on top, some vanilla ice cream and salted caramel sauce. Both OK but at that price they should have been a lot better. Service was good as was the coffee. Our bill was 121 euros which included just one small glass of wine. So a reliable old favourite is struck off the list. Maybe next time I'll go for a crepe!

What a great dinner we had here. my man and I chose two different menus €28 €34;) both were excellent. nothing too tasty, just well prepared, delicious food. it is definitely worth a booking; we visited on a Saturday night and several people without... bookings were turned away while we were there.

We have this restaurant for many years (our last review was 2012,) and felt that it was time to write a new review, since mysteriously no one else has written in English in the meantime. it was excellent in 2012, and it is...better now renovated after a building. service is excellent, professional without strength. the eating is excellent, we can recommend the entrance level menu du marche, which contains at 24 euro a cheese car and a free selection of dessert from the war basket. hit that if you can! boil lemon souffle with a shot limoncello is still to die. without hesitation we recommend this device again.
