Les P'Tits Mets Gourmets - Macamic

The name of this restaurant hints at a gourmet experience. Actuality is at best an OK pedestrian experience. The front (main) dining room has seen better days. Tables are decent sized to accommodate 4 diners each and are spaced far enough apart to provide adequate privacy. There are also 8 stools at a service counter for those who so choose. But the paint on the walls is badly chipped and the ceilings are stained… so the ambiance is not exactly dingy, but could benefit from an overall refresh. (The second room at the back of the restaurant is in much better shape.) The menu is extensive… multiple pages with a full range of standard Canadian diner / restaurant offerings… breakfast, lunch and dinner. But none of the offerings can by any stretch of the imagination qualify as “gourmet”. As an example, the menu has just two fish options… Fish & Chips and Filet of Sole. I opted for the Filet of Sole on rice, which included a salad (choice of 5 dressings), and 3 deep fried potato wedges. Reinforcing the diner-like experience, everything arrived on a single dish with no attempt of visual appeal, chunks of fish scattered on top of what turned out to be fried rice. The fish was bland; the salad was OK; the potato wedges were also bland; the fried rice was quite tasty with bits of fried onion, green peppers and seasoned with soya sauce. Price in line with average diners. Limited selection of beers and house wine by the glass. Liquor also available. I ordered a beer which came with a standard glass, not frosted.For those who care… WiFi is available via a network of municipal library providers. A little tricky to log in… on the welcome page Libraire pulldown menu make sure you select Macamic… and then use the password posted by the cash register.Overall… Average good experience. Not worth stopping before reaching La Sarre. Note to non-Francophones: I personally could read/speak/understand enough French to navigate through and order from the French-only menu… and the WiFi instructions above. The waitress was friendly and although she spoke/understood zero English we managed to stumble through the ordering process. But to dine here the patron does need to have some knowledge of French… at least enough to read the menu and then be able to point.

The menu was only is french but for ordering breakfast my husbands one year of Jr High French over 30 years ago was sufficient to order eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast. I prefer my eggs over hard but we could not find a word to communicate that so I had them over easy. That was our fault for not brining along an English/French dictionary. It was a relief to be in fresh air after the night we spent in the hotel across the street.

It was a welcome change to be outside in the fresh air after spending the night in the hotel across the street.
