Restaurant bewertenWe have been customers at this restaurant almost since it opened, and living nearby have used it regularly over the years. It cheered up this part of Ambert, in its previous life it was the Hotel de la Dore, and sat there unloved for sometime. The chef, and the staff are very friendly and helpfull, the food is well cooked, and plentiful. The restaurant is not far from the railway station(tourist trains),parking is easy, and its only a few minutes walk to Ambert central. Thursday is market day, and you are well advised to reserve, it gets pretty hectic, there is anoverflow eating area to the rear evidence of its hotel function. Its also very popular for local clubs, and many of the local company employees devote themselves regularly to the excellent cuisine. We usually eat lunchtime (menu du jour), but there is an a la carte available. Best to check their website for opening times, there is an online reservation sytem which works very well. Our French is not up to conversational level, but between us and the staff we seem to get by. We hope all new visitors enjoy this little restaurant as much as we do.
We had the menu du jour at lunchtime. We struggled with our French, they with their English. We've been before and expected good things and were not disappointed. The menu du jour was €12.90 €1 for coffee. The choice was restricted but the food was great and the value terrific. Starters melon or poelee, mains coquelet or 2 others, then cheese platter, choice of two desserts, plus water and red wine and bread all in with service charge. We'll be back!
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Au beurre de thym. The meal was excellent although the portions were very large. We struggled with our two courses and saw the desserts which were also huge. We had a brief look at the Bon Coin (currently no 1 in Ambert) before going but Au beurre de thym is head and shoulders above that.
