Weiterlesen I must confess, I don’t understand the hype for France Soir. Despite friends having many a long boozy lunch here and raving about the place, our experience was far from notable from the ‘casual’ nature of the wait staff to the lack-luster food. With the exception of a well cooked veal cutlet, this establishment would have a hard time surpassing many of the local pub feeds and at three times the price.We had booked an earlier session being informed we only had the table for an hour and a half. All good. On arrival we were some of the first patrons and rather than being greeted and shown to our table, we were asked to find our own. This we did only to then be asked to move because it has been set for three not two. Service was there but extremely slow and delivered almost begrudgingly.My entrée of scallops ($30) was the first disappointment of the night. Four, small dry scallops sat forlornly in a cream sauce. I could have forgiven their size if they’d been cooked correctly but they had not and were dry and unappealing. Main “Demi-caneton rôti, à l’orange” Roasted half duck with orange sauce ($42) – again disappointing. To be fair, the duck breast was cooked perfectly but the leg and thigh were dry and long overdone. The sauce thin and nothing more than a thin gravy with the barest hint of mandarin. The accompanying pomme frits were cold. For me the highlight of the night was the bread and butter which is fairly disappointing really. My wifes entrée of Cervelles d’agneau aux câpres - Lamb brains with caper sauce ($19) appeared to have been steamed, providing a consistency that she was not expecting. Her main of Côte de veau Normande - Veal chop with mushrooms, cream & Calvados ($41.50) was perfectly prepared and the highlight of the night.The wine list is extensive, dare I say exhaustive, which is fantastic if you know your stuff. I’m not ignorant in those regards but actually getting a member of the staff to provide advice & guidance on your selection proved impossible so we simply went with a bottle of the local product. The staff while friendly, seemed to spend more intent on fawning over known regulars than welcoming or impressing new customers. Overall, we were sadly disappointed. The bar had been set fairly high on friends recommendations and it came nowhere to achieving the high standard it espouses.
