29.01.2024 - 17:17Dropped in for lunch as my husband promised me he used to get amazing sandwiches there when he worked in Macc a few years ago. Unfortunately, it seems that this isn’t the case anymore. The first issue was the sparkling water I ordered. The glass was really dirty so I decided to just use the bottle. The label had mould spots all over it and after opening the water and trying it, I spotted that it was past its Use By date by two months. I let the waitress know and she told me she couldn’t get me another as it was the last one. I declined an alternative replacement. The food then took far too long to arrive considering it was only two sandwiches and the place was almost empty. Just as we were about to put money on the table for the other drink and leave, the waitress came with our food. I’d asked for my sandwich without tomato (which the waitress had made a note of on her pad I know this because the first time she came to take the order, she had no pen, and the second time she came, her pen wasn’t working. The third time, she wrote it down) but it came with tomato anyway. When I highlighted this, she pointed blankly at the chalkboard on the wall and told me “but it comes with tomato”. This was strange as my husband had asked for his club sandwich without bacon and that order was correct, even though the chalkboard said that “it comes with bacon”. We decided to eat anyway, despite having serious doubts about the place (I’d been on Trip Advisor and also looked at their food hygiene rating by this point). My turkey, avocado, tomato with no tomato, and mayonnaise sandwich was really disappointing. The white bread was clearly from a cheap loaf of sliced bread (not really what I’d expected from a deli), the turkey tasted like something from a packet of sandwich meat, the mayonnaise was not on the sandwich (and tasted and smelled suspiciously like salad cream) and the tomato was fine other than it being on the sandwich when I’d asked for it not to be. The side salad was a small amount of iceberg lettuce, a couple of slices of cucumber, and even more tomato (I was beginning to think there was some sort of tomato conspiracy going on by this point). I didn’t eat the salad due to the extensive contamination from the tomato innards, so no review there. The meat and cheese items in the deli counter were covered with cling film, but there were quite a few flies flying around inside the glass and landing on things, and some of the cakes and pastry items were uncovered, so had likely had flies on them at some point. Both staff also handled the cheese etc. with their bare hands. The place also just seems a bit grubby in general. The guy working there seemed lovely very polite and accepting when I told him the food wasn’t worth the money we paid (and it was only £13.95 for two sandwiches and a coffee thankfully I didn’t get charged for the mouldy water) but the woman’s waiting on and interpersonal skills left a lot to be desired. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt and blame the covid pandemic, but after looking at previous reviews it seems that these issues have been ongoing for quite some time. The place looks so great from the outside but it’s definitely lacking in quality and cleanliness.
