OK, I 've walked from the Arc de Triomphe to Place Victor Hugo. I 'm tired, concerned about how much I spent on the Avenue, and hungry. It 's early afternoon and the Place is full of tourists eating expensive but indifferent food served perfunctorily at one or another of the sidewalk cafes that all look the same. But I 'm lucky enough to glance down the Avenue Raymond Poincare and see the Al Dar awning. Curious, I walk the half block, pick up the inviting scent of Lebanese food, step in, and order a chawarma au poulet mainly because it includes poulet and a mysterious but very green side salad. I figure out from the matter of fact but courteous staff what I just bought and to whom to pay the surprisingly small bill. I then go out, sit at a modest table, watch and hear actual French persons talk about their work and lives, and enjoy one of the very best lunches I 've ever had in Paris.

We have often visited the remarkable Chateau de Chenonceaux for the reasons you'd expect. But one reason that took us several visits to discover (but only one visit to appreciate) was lunch at L'Orangerie a beautiful restaurant situated in one of the most beautiful and peaceful sections of the Chateau property. The menu has always been interesting and the food well prepared. The service is very professional and appears able to manage all the various languages and peculiarities that come with tourists from all over the globe. I suggest making a day at the Chateau just about perfect by having lunch at L'Orangerie but remember to make a reservation.

As frequent travelers to Paris, we have had pleasant and unpleasant surprises with Michelin-starred restaurants. We count our recent night at Carre des Feuillants among the most pleasant. The cooking was creative and the food delicious. But as important, the service was professional and at the level expected for a starred restaurant. We look forward to eating again at Carre des Feuillants.
