Scratch manages to be both very serious about food and casual enough that everyone feels welcome, even in jeans, or even on a weeknight. Also: outrageously affordable for the quality, which is becoming rare in this city. My date and I enjoyed the beef asada tacos, and plates of blistered shishito peppers and the crisped brussels sprouts. The beef was perfect, integrating light fatty pockets with crispy meat, peppers were nicely blackened, and brussels sprouts mind-blowing: perfectly crisped and drizzled in a sweet/sour sauce and served with a mild, mousse-like cheese. We both enjoyed our unique drinks, appreciated the fine service (it seemed like our server was still catching up with the bar staff), the warm dining room, which was never noisy despite being a full house. Don, the owner, stopped by to check on our table personally, a nice gesture that reinforced the friendly neighborhood atmosphere.
