Raymond's is a must while in St. John's. A little pricey, but worth every penny once you taste the food and wine parings. I had no idea such flavours existed in food. They were able to accommodate my dietary restrictions without compromising the quality and...taste. Thank you to the amazing chefs and staff for making this a very memorable food experience.
Well... it wasn’t a terrible meal. The restaurant replaced both our main entrees when my husband found a tiny worm crawling on his garnish. My husband wasn’t thrilled from the moment he was called ma’am by the hostess when we entered. He doesn’t look like...a woman, but I suspect the hostess wasn’t paying attention or was having a bad day. Anyways, I loved the atmosphere old school fine dining. The first course showcasing three parts of a cod (cheek, tongue, filet) was perfect for Newfoundland and surprisingly tasty, and beautifully served. This course was followed by another I liked, but our meal was a couple months ago, and I forgot what it was. Then the entree with the “guest” it had been a steak. Kate a couple bites of the steak prior to my husband’s discovery, and it was very tough. I was happy when the restaurant offered to replace both our entrees. We were given the halibut instead, and it was good. It was garnished with some of those same leaves that had a worm on them, and I noticed my husband pushed all the leaves to the side. I ate mine. All clear. Our final course was dessert, and I don’t remember what it was either other than it wasn’t sweet which isn’t a bad thing but it also wasn’t anything I wanted to finish eating. We both ate about half of whatever it was, and that was that. I should mention, the restaurant also gave us each a free drink because of the insect issue. That was all they did. Our bill, converted to dollars, was about $350. Two tasting menus and one half of a wine flight, plus two free drinks. Final verdict= it just wasn’t worth it. The food wasn’t good enough to justify the price.
Beyond the smelly and unattractive entrance you will find a well laid out restaurant with open kitchen. As the past tenant was a bank, you can dine in the former safe room. The main courses descriptions were not appealing so our meal was composed only...from appetizers: raw and warm. Yellow fin tuna tartare was abundant and well seasoned. Just out of the fishing season, the crab legs had been frozen: basic but delicious Tomato based Fish soup was a pleasant change from the traditional chowder. It had a nice heat to it. Mussels were big and chunky cooked in a delicious broth with tomato and garlic. Most deceiving was the wine selection. Nova 7 Benjamin Bridge 2020 is a sparkling, sweet with 6.5% alcohol content that barely qualify as a wine. We exchange it for a common French white. Although Laurence Féraud is located in Chateauneuf du Pape, that white wine was wrongly advertised as a Côte du Rhone blanc.
YUM! Raymonds certainly doesn't disappoint. Visited the end of 2020 and I'm still dreaming about the Parsnip Apple soup. It was hands down the best soup appetizer I've ever had the pleasure of trying. For the main I had the Pork and it...was equally as tasty, the grilled cabbage on the plate really brought the flavours together, YUM! Our server was friendly attentive. The wine was delightful. While it is on the more expensive side, if you're looking for a special evening, Raymonds is the place to go! You truly get what you pay for in my opinion.
