Restaurant bewertenHad an absolutely amazing meal here on the last night of our holiday. If we had found it earlier in the week we would have been in more than once. The staff were very pleasant and attentive without being in your face. The food was first class. It was plentyfull and served piping hot. The chips were to die for. This little gem is off the beaten track but well worth the journey, reasonably priced. Highly recommended.
Excellent early meal on NYE. We were up from near Ox and had booked in advance. Service, ambience and food quality spot on. The steak was a cracker. Would thoroughly recommend.
We booked to have a meal here for our anniversary after reading the reviews and we had high hopes for a fantastic evening. The problems started straight away, we were seated near to a large screen TV that was blaring out Channel 4 programs! Maybe people in Cumbria do things differently, but I 'm guessing most people prefer music to create an ambiance. Living here we have never seen a TV showing TV programs during a lunch or evening service. No sooner had our bottoms touched the seats than we where asked what we wanted to drink, no time to sit and relax and peruse the beers at the bar, it was make your order and make it now attitude. The menus and the specials board came next, it all seemed a season to early, this is August in the grips of a heatwave and one of the specials was Game Pie! This was followed by 2 very small slices of bread and a large amount of butter. No side plates were forthcoming and no butter knives either. The bread and butter was nothing special. The starters were good. The trio of fish was lovely, Hot Salmon, Tout and a small Prawn Cocktail were superb. The deep fried prawns, done 3 ways were also rated wonderful. After no real break the mains arrived. The lamb fillet was served with mashed potato, black pudding, onion rings and a jug of redcurrent jus It was confused already before the bowl of chips and winter vegetables arrived with new potatoes! I really would like to say that the main was lovely, but it wasn 't. The Lamb fillet was very overcooked, the black pudding should never have been there as it did nothing to enhance the dish, but overwhelmed the lamb. Not sure why there where onion rings on the plate, but these were cold and left uneaten. The jus was just redcurrent jelly warmed up and was so sickly sweet it made the dish virtually inedible. The shared veg was carrots and red cabbage, not something you want on a hot August evening and the chips were OK but didn 't really go with the dish. I would have pointed put the overcooked lamb to the young ladies serving, but they never came near, preferring to chat with the locals. When we did tell them it was an eye roll and we will tell the chef. The half roasted duck was nice, but again came with onion rings, mashed potato and a very sickly morello cherry sauce. The winter veg and the chips did nothing to enhance it. Altogether the meal wasn 't worth the money paid and we felt rushed through from entering to leaving. There are much better eateries in the area that care about their guests, be they visitors or locals, and care about the food they serve. This is one establishment we won 't be returning to.
Absolutely fabulous. Exquisite food served in excellent and modern surroundings. Liz is an excellent chef and Tony the perfect host. Do not change a single thing. Already looking forward to our next visit. Diane and Graham
