Weiterlesen Food Club Holyrood 9A, Edinburgh Friday 21st November 2014 Your favourite food bloggers were back in Edinburgh on Friday and preparing themselves for another great night. The low temperatures and horrible rain could not dampen our spirits and we walked from Waverley to our destination. We were seated at the back of the restaurant on a comfy laid back couch. The selection of beers was extensive and mesmerising. They offer smaller pints (Halfs or Thirds) giving us the best chance to sample the fine nectar on show. All I can say is that the Lagers Ales were delightful and a fine accompaniment to the meal. I won’t try and name them all but I will encourage you to mix it up. The one with Grapefruit was my favourite. Now on to the food, The Appetiser side of the menu was a little underwhelming in terms of choice with only 4 to choose from. We got the Garlicky Flat cap Mushrooms which were great and strong in flavour. We also got some Rye bread with dipping oils and the fried buttermilk chicken, delicate crunchy with a zingy lemon mayo to compliment the pallet. Excitement had been building for the main course. You just can’t beat a cold beer and burger with the boys. The menu offered a wide variety of Beef, Chicken, Vegetarian and even some alternatives with Haggis Venison. However, we pride ourselves on loving the beef tucked in. ‘The Chilli Death’ was a combination of pickled jalepeno, fresh chillies, sour cream, smoked cheddar chilli jam. The burger was brilliant but a let down on the spicy side but try telling that to one such member who was wiping the heat sweats throughout. The ‘Italienne’ burgers were beautiful, melted buffalo mozzarella, sun blushed tomato a pesto mayo. ‘The Holyrood BBQ’ was packed with smoked bacon, red onion, peppers smoked cheddar with a tangy BBQ sauce. The similar named ‘Holyrood’ had Hop cheese, Beer mustard mayo and a caramelised onion mayo. The final burger was ‘The Blue Murder’ topped with a flat cap mushroom, smoked bacon, garlic mayo and punchy blue cheese. Some of us upgraded to sweet potato fries…. never a bad decision. We also got some onion rings to share… as one pointed out, you know it’s a good onion ring when you bite it and all the onion doesn’t come out at once. I’d be lying if I said we hadn’t noticed the collection of board games on a shelf…. While waiting for the desserts we grasped that old family favourite ‘Pop n’ Hop’… clearly Aldi’s version of Frustration. We played in teams and started a gripping intense game. Our desserts came but there were more important matters at hand. We got a selection of Sticky Toffee Pudding, Chocolate Brownie the Chocoboco Glory. The deserts were great and thoroughly enjoyed…. But back to the board game, Things were hotting up and emotions were running high. A few things were said in the heat of the moment but we’re all friends at the end of the day. Victory was achieved and the losers accepted their fate. We finished the evening by drawing our secret Santa for next month’s Christmas Extravaganza and headed through to the Grass Market for few more pints. A big thank you as always to the very friendly staff and very pleased to discover another of Edinburgh’s hidden gems Good Food, Good drink, Good prices and excellent boards game entertainment.
