This has been on my list for a while and only managed to get there this morning. I wanted to check what the fuss was all about. A very basic small place that seats a maximum of 24 shoulder to shoulder! The secret is behind the counter - the wife greets you while preparing a rhubarb tart - a variety of coffees on offer and a selection of cookies and cakes. You feel like ordering one of each - I went for the cherry cake and a latte coffee. Behind her is Omar preparing lunch - it felt like walking into a home kitchen- busy with an assistant, grinding and peeling and preparing fish. A delivery arrives with a batch of chicken like you have never seen. I will be going back for lunch soon.
Wonderfully welcoming café, even to me and a friend who arrived on a whim without a reservation. We were lucky to have arrived early as the tables were starting to fill while we finished off our delicious desserts and coffee. We weren't so hungry and were too tempted by the sweets laid out enticingly on the kitchen counter, so we opted to taste all the starters instead of a main course. Today those were white asparagus, split and roasted, with a deliciously light sauce and gorgeous delicate greens; labané drizzled with olive oil, dusted with sumac (maybe), a decorated with small yellow flowers; and an egg (delicately poached, I think, on a flat surface), with radish, super-puréed spinach sauce, feta and, again, beautiful greens. All plates were gorgeous and delicious and served with a smile. For the grand finale: a rhubarb crostata to die for, with a buckwheat crust and shavings of rhubarb atop a softer rhubarb filling. Thank you mokonuts for a wonderful lunch. I'll be back!!!
