I have been to a lot of the distilleries in my area. In each case they ranged from awkward to awesome. This is definitely the latter. We didn't get the name of the guy that walked us thru their product, and admittedly there aren't that many compared with others, ut his knowledge and passion shined thru making it really fun. They are advertised as moonshine but really its unaged bourbon. WHITE BOURBON!!! This stuff is awesome!! There was a gin but as I am allergic to Juniper I had to pass. We were told though that they are looking at an aged bourbon maybe for next year. There are some cute eateries in this little corner so you can spend some time here.....which I totally recommend! Have fun and get a bottle...it mixes nicely with lemonade!
I am starting my love of Pinetop slowly as I am quite sure this will be a lasting love affair. I have been to all of the current distilleries in my area and I can honestly say that Pinetop is in the top 2. We showed up on a Saturday and were asked if we wanted the dollar or .05 tour. Having been to so many of these we could probably give a tour so we opted for the fast and dirty version. Totally better than I thought! Our host was charming and passionate about his product. Sadly, I am allergic to Juniper and could only try the white Bourbon. It is NOT moonshine as advertised. This is a much cleaner sharper alcohol. Totally yummy when paired with lemonade btw. Right now there are just the 2 products but there are plans in the works my children of expanding their already tight skillz and adding a NC aged bourbon (the brown liquor we drink every weekend). Then....oh then I have a feeling that these tiny 3 stars will grow to 4. Its like Michelin....they need to grow into the 4th and dare I say 5th?
Awesome little distillery with passionate owners. Make a very good white bourbon and gin.
Pinetop Distillery is located roughly 5 minutes from Downtown Raleigh in Dock 1053 next to Lynnwood Brewing Concern. Tours are $10 and are available each Saturday from 1-5 PM on the half hour. You get two generous pours of both liquors, gin and moonshine, and a short tour of their facility (it is a very small space). On the tour we learned that pine top is an old nickname for moonshine which was interesting. Pinetop shirts are available to purchase and so are home-aging kits (this includes an oak barrel and a bottle of their moonshine which is the perfect gift idea).
