Restaurant bewertenI heard a lot about this place, so I went about 1400 on 10/11 and the place was closed. there was no note or a sign that indicates why. if this place was so good, why is it closed?
The yummy food here with its cajun style flavor probably merited the best fried fish in the galaxy moniker. The place tends to be on the smaller side and that causes it to lose a star. The restaurant only has space for a few tables and if you arrive at a busy time there is no space for you. It's not the fault of the owner, but it does take away from the overall accessibility if you know in your mind you may have to use it as a take out option. The owner even rapped for us and it felt a little bit like I lived in The Simpsons world as I wondered if the song would end. The comical relief aspect of it made the silliness easy to take. Go for the shrimp and hush puppies as they happen to be my favorite. The homemade, extra breaded fried choices make the place tasty. Funny enough, the food doesn't look appetizing, but the taste more than makes up for it. (I think the nontasty look has to do more with it being fried than anything else. When has fried food ever looked good? Go taste it, see if you can grab a seat, and prepare to be serenaded with a 90s style throwback rap beat.
When I first walked in, I couldn't tell if the place was even open since nobody was behind the counter or in the kitchen, but rather, they were sitting near the door filling out various papers. If you come here you will quickly learn that the owner runs both his restaurant as well as a tax/immigration service through the same building. Interesting, to say the least. The decor is very cheesy with a lot of old Star Wars art work parodied with sayings about fish, but it's still nice considering how small the restaurant is (only around 5 seats). Coming from California I am used to good fish so I didn't expect this place to compete and if you are hoping I was pleasantly surprised, I wasn't. The fish was good but nowhere near the best in the galaxy. The breading fell apart and the flavor was quite weak even with the hottest spice level. He was out of almost every side and the French fries, while cooked very well, lacked almost all flavor (would be great with more salt or spices though if I am rating this place on food alone I would rate it as slightly above average compared to nearby fried fish restaurants. Nothing compared to what I would get on the west coast. I did experience a bit of digestive issues later at night but it wasn't horribly unpleasant and I don't really think it was the fish, though it is worth noting. HOWEVER, the owner is just such an interesting and quirky guy that you find yourself enjoying the food more than you otherwise would. He is very friendly and even puts on a bit of a show while he's cooking and you can tell that he genuinely enjoys what he does. It was a bit weird when he started trying to speak a bunch of random Asian languages (quite poorly) though but hey, the guys a showman. Bottom line: You can certainly get your fish fix here and it's worth coming at least once just for the owner. I highly recommend this place if you are looking to place a large order and pick it up, otherwise you will probably find better fish elsewhere.
Lets be honest, this place aint much to look at. Its not even really set up to eat there but you can. When you walk in, if Mr B isnt in the kitchen, hes out front doing somebodys taxes or maybe some immigration paperwork. But ask him for a menu and he will tell you he has the Best Fried Fish in the Galaxy. And to be honest, its hard to argue. Fresh made, tender, juicy, flavorful. Just dang good. And so were the fried oysters, fried shrimp, onion rings and french fries. If it isnt fried they dont have it so dont ask. But be forwarned, Mr B is super nice and a talker and he will tell you over and over his is the Best Fried Fish in the Galaxy. Believe him.
I probably will not be back here. I got the shrimp fried rice and my boyfriend tried the fried fish. We both ended up having terrible stomach pains within an hour or so of eating this. We assume it was just the fried fish since I ate some of his food and he didn't try the shrimp fried rice. They both tasted great though. Shrimp fried rice was really good. The cooks personality was.. bubbly? kind've arrogant and annoying though.
