Cakes Trees - Maltkiln Lane

Got a slice each of the vegan cakes they had on the counter: oreo and banana. Both very dry. The oreo cake lacked flavor. I thought they were expensive for the size of the slice: $7/each (these were not layer cakes, they were closer to a small loaf in form). I do not mind paying for quality and/or flavor ..neither were there. Vegan cakes are better at Hollywood Bakery.

Friendly counter person. Lots of plants. Variety of items beautifully presented on cake stands. Coffee too. But the lone item purchased on this multi-destination celebratory day was the Detroit Bumpy Cake (10/2/21). Delicious!

The pour over coffee here was remarkably good and the pumpkin pie/cake was delicious! Glad to have this place around!

Popped in randomly and pre-paid for a cake for a friend's birthday. Came back the next weekend to pick it up and there was no cake ready for us. Was assured that I would be refunded, but never heard back. Followed up three separate times with the store and was told this would be handled, but that the owner needed to do it and was busy each time (one time they were busy hanging out with their dog and couldn't be bothered). Finally had to dispute the charge and have it removed from my credit card. Massive hassle for something that could have very easily been fixed.

Interesting concept! Cakery houseplant store? That's a 1st for me! I lack a green thumb so cant speak to the plant side of the operation. I do love their cakes! Cakes aren't incredibly fancy, and sort of remind me of cakes made at home. They are also pretty up front with what is good that day and which didn't come out as good as the others. Whenever I went with their recommendation it has been spot on! Detroit bumpy cake: as a detroit native, this was a great blast from the past! A little bit elevated version of the classic bumpy cake with a more decadent marshmallow bumpy topping and more of a liquid chocolate syrup topping than frosting. It is so good and better than what I remembered. Get this if they have it! Butter pound cake: this looked quite plain and not very interesting but they insisted it was what they couldn't stop eating themselves. They were right. Delicious flavor and nice mouth feel. so good with coffee! Buttermilk spice cake with brown sugar topping. Sounded more intriguing. And they tried steering me to the lemon cake but I got this one and it was a bit dry. Next time go with their recommendation! If you are familiar with Good Day donuts in white center, this is where the donuts are actually made. So they will usually have some Good Day donuts for sale in addition to cakes. They do savory pop ups which I still need to try as well! Stop by for some carbs and maybe get a house plant!
