Restaurant bewertenThis Deli is a unique one here in LA. If you're vegetarian, I recommend the avocado melt. This has an amazing atmosphere... and rarely find the characters that work on Canter's other places. The technology is amazing to keep people on the front books (no computer) for the entire place... And who can resist the bakery in front??? Truly a jewel embedded in LA (although I hear that they are used in Dodgers games and in Los Vegas). Where else can you get Corned beef at 4:00??? (open 24 hours) It's a little expensive for a sandwich, but it's worth it and can't beat from other local delis.
This is an old Jewish school. The chopped liver is amazing, horned beef ditto. Some of the employees were there forever. You serve drinks forever and are open 24 hours, I think. The desserts are not so good. Free parking included. It would not be LA without Canter’s
Canters was my first Jewish Deli experience. I also worked there for about 6 months, which had a lot of fun. It's crazy, huge, has waiters who have been here for 50 years. One of my favorite things was the pastrami reubs, although I stopped eating red meat so that is out. I love the Omelettes. For most desserts I don't care, but I love creamy cheesecake. The soups are also excellent.
After I grew up in Chicago, I know good Jewish delicacies. To live in Wyoming, I miss it very much. Canters Corned Beef Pastrami Sandwiches were a real treat for this now-small-town girl. I even took some home for my brother's wife. The Corned Beef Pastrami are wonderful the portions are huge! The rye bread potato salad was nothing to write at home, but who cares if the meat is made right. We all loved the bakery products they made the next day an unforgettable breakfast. My Fave was the Hamant, a short-bread-like pastry that surrounds a beautiful apricot filling. Canter's menu is enormous — 7 pages from everything from breakfast article child food to classic deli entrees old-fashioned cocktails. I wanted to return to L.A. to try some things that looked great. Try the smoked wild fish (black cod). We all swore about the buttery, rich, velvety fish with a slightly smoked taste. It is expensive, but the prices on the web are far higher if you can find it. This Deli is open 24 hours and has a food truck that drives around LA.
I love the Reuben sandwich and the matzoh ball soup is excellent. Their pickles are super crunchy and salty. Just perfect. Service is interesting: Either rude or extra nice, depending upon who you get. Just ignore the snippy waitresses and enjoy great food. The bakery is very good, too. Rum cake to die for.
