Update return visit for the Ox Tail Thursday Lunch Special! Glad I made the drive out to East Houston today to Big Dawg's. The Oxtail Lunch Special was beautifully plated, very tasty from the greens, mac cheese, cornbread and the Oxtails over a bed of rice. Basically quality and quantity was exceptional and the pics posted says it all.Well worth visiting this family run operation!Original Review as follows:Tucked in the corner of a small but busy shopping center in East Houston on Woodforest Blvd. Normandy St., is where my journey to find good Southern eats took me today.Big Dawg's Family Kitchen didn't disappoint. I was wanting to try the Ox Tails lunch special but opted to do the Friday fried fish lunch special that came with fries, salad and a drink. The fish was coated cooked perfect and had a really nice tasty flavor as well as the fries (which I believe are blanched? so the quality quantity was definitely there.I enjoy and feel it's important to support Independent Mom and Pop businesses so I do plan on stopping back by on a future Thursday to try out there Ox Tail special or Stuffed Turkey Leg for sure!Military and Seniors are also always welcome! Very nice down home folks.
They are nice ppl but the food less terrible. Our cabbage was dry and our pork chops were overcooked. We ordered smothered pork chops and they fried the chops and poured gravy over them. Smothering consists of cooking the chops in gravy until tender. I've never had bad soul food in Houston. But this was a first and last visit.
So I had been looking to try this place for awhile... I gave it three stars because I was a little disappointed with the Ox-Tails. We went on a Thursday when the oxtails were $16 and I only got 4 oxtails that were TOUGH and not tender. The Gravy that was on the oxtails DID NOT TASTE homemade. It tasted like McCormick gravy. I wasn't a fan of the Mac n cheese either. My boyfriend however really loved his porkchop plate. He also got mashed potatoes and green beans I tried both sides and they were pretty ok. The only thing I really did enjoy was the cornbread. The prices aren't to bad so I may go back to try something else. I know I won't ever eat the OxTails again though.
Everything was delicious. We ordered an oxtail plate, fish plate, wing special, fried chicken plate and two kids meals. Everything was seasoned well and the service was quick and great.
