Cantina El Mexicano - Funchal

Great choice on the menu. Lovely decor and ambiance. Both hubby and I chose Espatadas which are hanging skewered filet steaks. They were cooked to perfection and served with individual side salads and fries. Staff were lovely and the meal was excellent value for money. Very busy if you go Saturday night as there is live music on. We went in a Friday which was not busy but a lovely atmosphere with good background music playing. Thoroughly recommend a visit.

Before re visiting, I read other reviews so o was aware that waiting times for order could be long but In fact this wasn’t too bad and was average. I was apprehensive about going back because my last visit wasn't positive but I was as a group this time I had no choice but to go. I really like the location as you get a really good view of the sunset. Right away I was annoyed when I went to order my drink a still water with a slice of orange and I was informed that I would be charged for the orange. Unbelievable, this put me in bad form already as as crazy as it sounded, I don't think there was any budge on this. Although at minimal cost, it was the principal I've never been charged to put orange slices in my drink and gives off a greedy policy unless this is their trade policy. The food was cooked well portion decent but unfortunately that was the only positive part of my visit At the end the female waitress asked if we wanted dessert and we obliged but had to wait about 20 mins the dessert menu still hadn’t arrived and when we eventually told her that could we just have the bill due to the delay she just said ok no apology or explanation. This was terrible customer service and unfortunately the whole customer service in the restaurant put me off completely ever returning. I gave it a chance but theres too many better restaurants around with better service that deserve my custom. To top it off, it’s just as well I read reviews and realised that this is was a cash only establishment as there was nothing obvious to suggest this and it could have ended up in a tricky situation had I not been diligent. Disappointed slightly as this restaurant has potential but customer service is non existent and this is what will hurt its reputation

Ate here just the once. The service was good, the prices reasonable and the food nicely presented. For our palate it could have done with a bit more seasoning and spice in the food. We expect Mexican to have a bit more of a kick.

The waitress and the bald man were very uncourteous and of few words. Ordered a wine and brought another, without even letting us taste it, water? Forget! They hate italian people... And then comes the best part, when you get the bill €68) they say that it's not possible to pay with a debit card, as a complaint!!! They forced us to withdraw money from a nearby ATM followed by the girl and two minutes later they forced another elderly lady to do the same thing, I attach photos.

Long and drawn out experience, one of those where you realise early on you made the wrong decision and should've gone to that other restaurant but you hope you're mistaken and it will turn out alright. It didn't. Waited the length of a drink for the starter a small plate of nachos. Nice but underwhelming. Certainly not enough for the three of us. Then started our second wait for the four tacos and one burrito. Again, took half an hour or so. Had to chase to order more drinks. Food nice, but nothing extraordinary. Was left feeling hungry but decided not to wait another inordinate amount of time for more food. Asked twice for the bill. Eventually it came, along with the surprise announcement: cash only. Worst experience of our trip quite a feat considering everywhere else has been fine. AND it cost the most too!
