El Naranjo Rainey - Austin

We first discovered this place only because of a search for pet friendly restaurants. And boy did we stumble upon a gem. We have been here many times since our initial visit and love coming here for brunch or dinner sans the dogs! The service is always on point and the food and drinks are really good and creative as well!

Fantastic experience. Our waiter, Alejandro, was very attentive and provided great recommendations. The margarita’s are some of the best in Austin. The original and the tamarindo are a must! We tried a little of everything, guacamole, queso fundido con chorizo, beef rib, pork shank and the chicken verde enchiladas. The place was packed and the staff was working hard. I can’t wait to go back.

El Naranjo- South Lamar is a popular restaurant in South Austin especially since Chef De La Vega and El Naranjo became a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef Southwest in 2019. It is difficult to get reservations for this authentic Mexican restaurant with Oaxaca-inspired dishes. I wasn’t wowed by the food or service which is why it is getting 4 stars. There just wasn’t as much flavor as I was expecting and our server seemed flustered. We got the queso Oaxaca Fundido as an app. It’s good eating with the fresh tortillas. For the main course I got the Tlayuda Oaxaqueña which is basically a fat quesadilla in a charcoal like tortilla. I wouldn’t get it again as it was pretty bland. The salsa was its saving grace. Being there for brunch we also got the Tacos Dorados (think 3 big flautas). Those were good with the avocado salsa and rema mexicana. Overall, I was glad I tried it but not a place I’ll hurry back to.

Unfortunately this location will be closing November 16, but we will definitely go to the South Lamar location. Excellent interior Mexican food great service!

The guacamole was divine, and the mole delicious. While dessert does not seem to be their strong point, the chocolate cake lacked flavor, everything was delicious. Our server was pleasant, informative, and attentive. We had a wonderful experience and highly recommend.
