Tom Douglas Opens New Serious Pie Offshoot in Ballard for Takeout and Delivery Today

After closing his restaurants temporarily in March due to the impacts of COVID-19, Tom Douglas is opening at least one new venture. Serious Takeout debuts today in Ballard for no contact takeout, delivery (on Caviar, DoorDash, and ChowNow), and drive-thru service.

The new spot at 5118 14th Ave NW is an offshoot of the chef’s popular Serious Pie chain, featuring pizzas such as wild mushroom with truffle cheese, fennel sausage, and peppers, and mozzarella di bufala margherita. There are also oven-baked sandwiches on toasted rustic baguettes with smoked beef chuck roast, Draper Valley chicken, and grilled eggplant, along with beer, wine, and to-go cocktail kits. At a virtual Town Hall event organized by the nonprofit Seattle CityClub last week, Douglas mentioned the new project as he gave a candid assessment of his restaurant empire. He said that it was time to build “from the ground up” under difficult conditions, and hopes to move forward, bringing some employees back after letting go most of his workforce when the coronavirus crisis began.

The Serious Takeout space in Ballard was used for the Tom Douglas Seattle Kitchen catering operation. It also recently served as a pop-up grill that raised money for Food Lifeline, an organization supplying food banks that are currently in dire need of help. Likewise, $1 per every order at Serious Takeout will be donated to the group.

It also joins a very small group of Seattle restaurants that have made their debuts during Washington’s stay-at-home order, including chef Brendan McGill’s Italian sandwich shop Panino Taglio in Georgetown and the Vietnamese cafe Coffeeholic in Columbia City.
